Presentation

Summary

Green Shoots Foundation runs and ecological, award wining Agriculture Training Centre in North West Cambodia, The Agri-Tech Centre. Its design and philosophical beginnings are rooted in permaculture. On site we demonstrate to local farmers the basics of integrated farming by connecting growing plots, frog raising, chicken raising and compost making. We also have a biodigester to process cow and human manure into compost and biogas for cooking. In the growing plots we practice no-till farming, crop rotation and integrated pest management. Our aim is to make communities more food secure and resilient

The whole space is built using earth blocks the design is such that is allows for water resources management.

Additional information

1. Partnership

Clients / Target group

We are interested in partnerships with like-minded organisations in Cambodia and the region. Our space is also open for eco-volunteering, school partnerships in Cambodia and overseas/

Established collaborations and partnerships

We collaborate with architect and design companies that are interested in the structure and design of the space. We have also had successful partnerships with academic oranisations that use our space for extra-curricular learning. We are keen to partner with other agriculture based organisations to share expertise and knowledge.

Desired collaborations and partnerships

4 per 1000

From the 4 per 1000 initiative we aim to widen our network and share our research and findings. We are committed to soil resource management and as it is a constant trial and error, its beneficial to have a portal for knowledge share.

2.Solidarity - Twin-Regions

The twin regions concept aims to optimize the use of resources to address the global climate crisis and other pressing issues by promoting international solidarity and massive, empowered, self-reliant and equitable citizen participation. A Twin-Region is a pair of communities that are complementary in terms of green house gas emissions and sequestration potential. They pool their resources and collaborate in order to become carbon neutral and to solve other pressing environmental and societal issues, such as biodiversity loss and migration. Click here to read a one page outline.

Pros and cons

I think its a great concept. However we have to be certain on the twining. Local contexts can vastly be different and for long-term solutions it is imperative that twining are established taking differences into account. We have to understand environmental loss is usually coupled with socioeconomic issues, political agenda and so forth.

Relevance

Your role

I would be keen on (a) sharing what we have learnt from Cambodia (b) helping to understand and identify ways in which assessments could take place for twining.

3. Ecological footprint

Status

At the agritech centre in Cambodia we are committed to a close loop and having zero waste. Our entire construction is an eco-build using bamboo and earth blocks. We generate our power using solar panels, filter water using charcoal and fire our kitchen using biogas.

our only ecological footprint was air travel for one person per year- which has stopped since August 2019!
