DescriptionAgricultural producers worldwide, especially smallscale farmers in developing countries, should receive adequate compensation for the multifunctional services they provide. This implies creating incentive systems that blend revenues from agricultural products with compensation for generating positive environmental externalities. Such a ‘smart income mix’ should allow farmers to earn a living income while contributing to agri-food system transformation by catering for ecosystem services, climate change mitigation and adaptation. Recognizing the gap in climate finance for agriculture, this workshop will explore required actions to unlock public and private sector finance needed by smallscale farmers to transition to more sustainable practices. We will discuss mechanisms to access finance cost-effectively and performance-based, which are key design elements for compensation mechanisms. We will seek to learn from science and successful examples to understand how enabling conditions must be laid out to make payment for ecosystem services and carbon farming work for small-scale farmers.
