DescriptionThe European Commission has launched a public consultation on defining an EU climate target for 2040. Participation is possible until June 23, 2023. With the public consultation, the European Commission aims to gain insights and collect feedback on the EU's future climate targets and challenges across all sectors of the economy. The aim is to assess an appropriate interim target for 2040. The EU-wide interim target for 2040 is intended to support the achievement of climate neutrality by 2050 and to identify possible further developments of climate measures beyond 2030. To this end, the EU Commission plans to publish a communication, probably in the first quarter of 2024. This will incorporate the results of the consultation. The consultation is aimed at a broad public and stakeholders from relevant sectors. These include, among others, governments, public authorities, industrial sectors, associations, non-governmental organizations, and individuals and associations from science and research. The consultation is structured as a questionnaire to which participants can add position papers and further information.
