Bonn, 3rd May 2022

Dear Member of the Community of Practice,

A lot is happening in the Climate-Soil Community of practice, which we would like to share with you! We added new resources to the platform and would like to invite you to pre-schedule some events coming up in the next two months. There will be many opportunities for exchange, especially during the virtual fair. Let’s use this year and the Conferences of the Parties of the three Rio Conventions to build up momentum for healthy soils together!

30th of May: 2nd edition of the annual virtual fair of the “4 per 1000” Initiative

2022 virtual fair of the “4 per 1000” Initiative will take place for the second time on the occasion of the EU Green Week. This year, we are delighted that the GIZ Sector Project Soil Protection, Combating Desertification, and Sustainable Land Management (BMZ) supports the implementation of the fair as a patron.

We want to invite all Community of Practice members to increase their visibility by presenting their work (projects, technologies, methods, services, and other products) at the fair.

The 4p1000 fair is an excellent possibility for knowledge sharing, networking, and forging alliances. We will organize networking activities and a series of thematic and regional events in June, which will give participants a great platform to interact and search for partners. The high-level opening event of the fair will take place on the 30th of May.

Also, we are delighted to announce that there has been a significant make-over of the 4p1000 collaborative platform. The restructured "4 out of 1000" Knowledge Base allows you to quickly find the right partner for collaboration and start new projects, helps you develop technical solutions, and can provide answers to your questions about soil health and soil organic carbon. At the same time, you can get a fast overview of relevant events and newly published resources or present and discuss your ongoing work with peers during the annual virtual fair. More information on Fair and Knowledge Base will follow soon!

New article:

A revised version of the Biochar paper is available (February 2022). The main new features are a meta-meta-study and a weighting of how the effects of Biochar on soil water balance.

Biochar - a Soil Conditioner to Protect the Climate:

This synthesis of biochar analyses the effect of biochar application and production on soils and crops. Furthermore, this paper examines the impact of biochar use on carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.
