Abstract:

Recent global interest in restoration and tree planting represents a huge opportunity for delivering species conservation and ecological restoration that benefits biodiversity, people and captures carbon. However, with a lack of attention paid to species selection in planting programmes, biodiversity benefits are often missed. The Ecological Restoration Alliance of Botanic Gardens (ERA) and the botanical community has developed data tools and resources that can help restoration decision-makers and practitioners to shift towards an approach that benefits biodiversity. This presentation will share the work of ERA and the IUCN/SSC Plant Conservation Commission, and share tools to support species selection and to guide best practice for forest restoration. The Global Biodiversity Standard will also be introduced, which aims to assess the biodiversity value of tree planting and restoration programmes and provide an incentive to strive towards stronger biodiversity outcomes.

Kirsty Shaw is Head of Ecological Restoration and Tree Conservation at Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). She has worked at BGCI since 2012, and established the BGCI Africa office in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2017. Since joining BGCI, Kirsty has been working with botanic gardens in Africa on tree conservation and forest restoration projects, particularly focused on getting a broader mix of native species, including threatened species, into restoration and tree planting projects. She leads BGCI's global tree conservation programme, including our contributions to the Global Trees Campaign, and helps to coordinate the Ecological Restoration Alliance of Botanic Gardens, a global consortium of botanic gardens actively engaged in ecological restoration. Kirsty is also a member of the IUCN/SSC Plant Conservation Committee, IUCN/SSC Eastern Africa Plant Red List Authority and IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group.
