Problem nameMalnutrition, children drop out from school because of low income
Problem descriptionMore than 70% of Nigerians are smallholder farmers who produce about 90% of Nigeria's food on un-irrigated plots (FAO, 2021). As a result of lack of credit to scale up, poor infrastructure, limited knowledge, lack of business skills and organizational support that could give them the bargaining power required to interact on equal terms with other market intermediaries, they are usually exploited leading to low income.
Problem ConsequencesConsequently, malnutrition especially among women and children increased. 10.8% of children under the age of 5 years had prevalence of wasting while 43.8% are stunted. Also, maternal death increased and several children stopped schooling (World Bank and FAO, 2021 https://www.fao.org/3/cb4474en/cb4474en.pdf). This persisted because we do not have a culture of farming. It is usually looked down upon, many people believe that it is a job for the low life.
