Summary

Tackling climate change requires access to reliable data to evaluate footprint of the production of sugarcane. For the last 10 years, Bonsucro has offered to sugarcane producer a systematic and consistent methodology to evaluate their footprint and estimate their GHG emissions. A robust LCA is included in the Bonsucro calculator, the main tool used by certified sugarcane producers as part of their certification journey.

  1. We had a look at their GHG calculator they use for their certification program. I once developed a post-harvest loss calculator in Excel (https://www.aphlis.net/en/page/6#/) and was very interested to hear about their experience with Excel versus online databases and the challenge of decentralized data management. The cost of training users is a recurring theme. Excel has a great advantage because of its popularity. The technical realization is inexpensive. So it is also easier to improve and update it. Bonsucro GHG calculator takes into account a large set of indicators. http://www.bonsucro.com/tools_resources/bonsucro-calculator/I will take a closer look at the calculator and try to find a number of other people developing similar calculators to learn from them and stimulate synergy.
