Creation of Task Forces to advance the implementation of the "4 per 1000" Strategic Plan

Note: We are currently launching a Delphi study to give you the possibility to have a say in the development of the implementation strategies. We intend to complete the implementation strategies early next year. Once the implementation strategies are finalized, the task forces will set priorities and form teams for developing action plans and projects contributing to the achievement of the goals and targets for 2030 and 2050. Join now and make your contribution the Delhi study to ensure that your opinions and expertise are valued in this process. The train picks up speed.

Introduction

Since June this year the "4 per 1000" international Initiative has set its Strategic Plan.

Now that the strategic plan is in place, we must work on its implementation as quickly as possible. We want YOU to be involved in the implementation! Our common vision is to have healthy and carbon-rich soils worldwide to fight climate change and end hunger. We can only achieve this with your knowledge and support. In return, the "4 per 1000" Initiative makes your voice heard, arranges partnerships and thus facilitates the acquisition of resources and support for the realization of your projects.

The strategic plan comprises 24 objectives with specific targets for 2030 and 2050. We intend to create 24 Task Forces, one for each objective.

Therefore we'd like to ask you to join the Task Forces that are of special interest to you and your organization. Joining a Task Force will allow you to extend your professional network, to learn, to improve visibility of your contribution and to benefit from working together in an international team. Exchange and collaboration is facilitated by our cutting edge electronic platform that Task Force member may also use for decentralized development of their related actions and projects. After registration the Task Force Facilitator will guide you.

Purpose of Task Forces

In the context of the "4 per 1000" Initiative the primary objective of the Task Forces is to develop a catalog of coordinated actions and projects that represent compelling investment opportunities, which will be brought to the attention of decision-makers and funders in the public and private sectors through the "4 per 1000" initiative.

The general purpose of the Task Forces is to provide a space where stakeholders can meet, exchange and collaborate on issues regarding the objective.

To initiate a constructive and result-oriented cooperation, the initial tasks for each task force are:

  1. to map relevant on-going actions and projects in order to get a shared vision of the point of departure
  2. to elaborate implementation strategies that allow reaching the targets for 2030 and 2050 and
  3. to outline action and project plans for future activities for reaching the targets.

Task Forces are also a consultative and advisory body expected to provide advice to third parties upon request.

How to join a Task Force

Step 1 - Select the Task Forces that are relevant to you: Study the following list of objectives and select a manageable number to whose task force you can contribute and/or which are of particular interest to you and your organization. Carefully read the targets for 2030 and 2050!

Step 2 - Fill out the corresponding registration form: Click on the "Join Task Force XY" button under the desired objective to display the appropriate registration form. Complete it and click on "Submit" to register. You can join a task force as a "Global Leader", "Regional Representative" or "Team Member". Decide which role suits you best. Only individuals from an organization that is a member or partner of "4 for 1000" can be named "Global Leaders" or "Regional Representatives". Non-members of "4 for 1000" can only join a Task Force as "Team Members", but are welcome!

Click here to have a look at the different roles

Global Leader:

  • Organize a inter-regional consultative processes for a specific objective
  • Supervise activities, monitor progress and report to the Forum of Partners
  • Liaise with the Executive Secretariat and Scientific and Technical committee

Regional Representatives:

  • Identify additional relevant partners in their region and encourage them to join the Initiative
  • Organize the regional consultative processes
  • Supervise activities, monitor progress and report to the regional meetings
  • Liaise with the Global Task Force Leader
  • Liaise with regional and national authorities to facilitate coordination of actions with defined development strategies and on-going programs

Team Member:

  • Provide information on relevant on-going actions and projects
  • Contribute to the formulation of the implementation strategy
  • Help to identify additional partners in their region
  • Outline actions and projects that contribute to the targets
  • Actively contribute to the consultative processes

The Executive Secretariat of "4 per 1000" will facilitate a consultative process for the final selection of the Leader and Regional Representatives and the establishment of the Task Force. In addition to organizational issues, a balanced representation of the various stakeholders will play an important role in the formation of the Task Forces.

Note: We are currently launching a Delphi study to give you the possibility to have a say in the development of the implementation strategies. Please note that you must register for the Task Forces before October 31st, 2020 if you wish to participate in the Delphi study. However, Task Forces will remain open for registration and interested parties are free to join the work at any later stage.

Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)

Ensure that the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of all UNFCCC country Parties contain references to soil health and Soil Organic Carbon (SOC), and that they are taken into account in their sustainable agriculture development programs.

In 2019, out of 196 countries' NDCs, only 13 refer to SOC in relation to agricultural mitigation targets or adaptation actions, and 20 refer to peatlands or wetlands in relation to such targets.

A further 3 NDCs refer to soil carbon without clear linkages to targets.

Enlist 100 % of country parties at the UNFCCC, members or partners of the "4 per 1000" Initiative.

In 2050, ensure that, globally, 100% of all UNFCCC country Parties include Soil Health and SOC in their NDCs and development programs.
